Types of Hammocks
I said it before and I’ll say it again, the number of hammock styles is much more than several. The best way to choose is by defining your comfort level.
Do you like to be cradled or is a cushioned bed more your thing? Or perhaps you want minimalist. Let’s cover some of the basics of some of the best hammocks with stands to help you decide.
The double fabric hammock is a generic term that covers hammocks that are generally made with a single type of material or a light material blend. They usually come with stands that are easily put together.
If you don’t like the stands, they can also be hung between two trees, poles, from the ceiling or attached to sturdy walls. They are backyard hammocks, not easily moved or toted as they are kind of heavy in general.
To begin with we have the Brazilian Style Double Hammock. This is a tightly woven, comfortable, supportive hammock bed that is excellent for cooler breezier days. Still made for nightly sleeping in some areas of Brazil, these hammocks can be handcrafted or machine-made, are usually brightly colored, vibrant, and come in several designs.
The Quilted Hammock is one to admire if only for its comfort alone. The filled and stuffed fabric of the hammock bed creates a cozy, cushiony bed. It usually comes with a spreader bar and stands that keep the bed wide open and sturdy.
Now if you already have the biggest accessory to a backyard oasis installed the swimming pool the Poolside Hammock could be just for you. The fabric is sometimes quilted but always easily cleaned and resistant to fade and mildew. This stand-alone hammock usually comes with the spreader bar as well to keep the bed nice and flat and open to sunbathing.
The Rope Hammock is the best free standing hammock for the minimalist in you. It’s not cushiony nor will it keep you warm in the fall breeze, but the open weave will allow the nice summer breeze to cool you off and the cotton rope is soft.
The Nicaraguan Hammock is a super soft, tightly woven, yet pliable and comfortable, handmade, and decorative bed style hammock. It is a non-spreader bar style hammock, gathered at the ends, and can be hung in several ways but also easily by a classic stand.
Things to Consider
When choosing a hammock some things come to mind:
First, you’ll want to set your price range. Because of the quality of materials and craftsmanship, some of these can scale pretty high on the price list. The idea “you get what you pay for” does carry merit, but just because one hammock is more expensive than a similar style doesn’t mean it is better. Be careful and do your research.
Comfort is very important when it comes to the one you’ll be used solely for relaxation. You don’t want to purchase a piece of comfort just to hate being on it. Sounds like a waste, not relaxing, and a recipe for disappointment.
Maintenance and care is something to really look at, what is your climate? Hot and humid? If so, you’re going to want something easily cleaned and taken care of. If your climate is more moderate and varied, you could probably get away with leaving it out for long stretches with less maintenance.
Last, consider your use of the hammock. Is this going to be one you come home every day and crash in for hours at a time? If so, you’re going to want to look at a hammock bed that will cradle and comfort you from the touch of the fabric to the openness of the weave.

Who Wins the Roundup?
While I’ve only tested one of these hammocks listed above, I’ve accomplished quite a bit of hammock time in my day allowing for similar styles to be tested out occasionally.
The poolside hammock would probably be my last choice. In terms of comfort, it just wouldn’t cut it for me. I need a spot where I’ll be comfortable and relaxed no matter how convenient it is to clean or keep maintained. Also the material isn’t as eco-friendly as we’d like to think.
The rope hammock is nice for Caribbean weather, I want a hammock that can be used for as long as the weather would allow even on those chilly spring or fall afternoons.
The quilted hammock looks like it would be comfortable for sure. However, a spreader style probably wouldn’t be for me. In my comfort, I like to be cradled and cozied.
The Brazilian Style from Best Choice was specifically tested out for this roundup. It’s comfortable, durable, and conveniently set up and taken down to be stored. It’s decently priced, and also is the only one that comes with a stand. This is a great runner-up option, especially the stark differences it has against the winner.
The winner of the roundup is definitely the Nicaraguan style hammock, but not for the reason you’d think. It couldn’t be just any of this style, it would have to be one from this company, specifically. Sure the care is tedious and the price is exorbitant in comparison to the runner-up.
And sure the design is gorgeous, but what really tears at my heartstrings is that it is apart of a great organization and connection to a wonderful brand that is doing good by assisting artists to make money with their craft- in a flexible setting to help keep families together.
Please hold while I grab my credit card and give all my money to these amazing artists and their “employers”.
